F-15 Crew Ejects Over Libya After Mechanical Failure

The good news is that no one died from the first allied mishap over Libya. The crew of an F-15 Strike Eagle ejected over northeast Libya after their jet experienced an “equipment malfunction” late Monday night.

Ken Fidler, a spokesman for the U.S. Africa Command, tells Danger Room that recovering the crewmembers “continues to be an ongoing operation, but they are safe.”

Five days into Operation Odyssey Dawn and — as predicted (cough) — the U.S.-led coalition has moved from grounding Gahdafi’s planes to going after his tanks, trucks and artillery units. “We are putting pressure on Gadhafi’s ground forces that are attacking civilian populations in cities,” Vice Adm. Gerard P. Hueber, chief of staff of the task force conducting the war, told reporters at the Pentagon on Wednesday afternoon.

1) USMC unveiled some interesting details about the rescue mission of one of the crew members of the USAFE F-15E crashed 40 km east of Benghazi. The mission flown by the USMC was a TRAP (Tactical Recovery of Aircraft and Personnel) and not a CSAR: the first is “a planned recovery of personnel or equipment of your own operations located in your own area of responsibility”, the latter is “a planned rescue mission of distressed personnel anywhere in a joint theater”. What makes the difference is the lethality of the scenario: CSAR missions are flown in high-lethality ones, TRAP are those flown in medium to low-lethality ones, as the Libyan one.
